About Henna
Henna Platform was founded in 2021 by artists, activists, and academics from the Middle East, as well as refugees and immigrants, who are concerned with issues of justice and liberation.
Henna Platform produces knowledge and culture related to the political and social conditions in the Middle East and in the diaspora. In both Arabic and English, Henna produces in-depth written knowledge in the form of articles, research, and investigations through a blend of journalistic, academic, and artistic lenses. It also organizes and produces cultural and artistic events across Canada.
With equity and courage as core values, Henna empowers Arabic-speaking refugees and newcomers from different backgrounds to narrate their stories and produce knowledge about themselves and their contexts. We delve into complexities while trying to understand ourselves and the world to gain a deeper understanding necessary for strategic change-making.
The word “Henna” in Arabic has two meanings: the first is henna, which is a traditional symbol in Arab culture. The second is “us,” in the Bedouin dialect.
